Artist Nils Karsten channels his punk rock youth into large format wood block prints and collages enlarging and abstracting, not only the images, but the anxiety of a generation still grappling with a turbulent world.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Karsten apprenticed as a cabinetmaker in Berlin before moving to New York in 1995. He went on to study painting at the School of Visual Arts (graduated with honors), is an alum of the prestigious Skowhegan program, and has his MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is currently a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
His artistic endeavors have gained recognition in galleries and museums across the United States and internationally, with exhibitions at venues such as Pearl Lam Galleries in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China, the Pera Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, and the Museum of Fine Art in Split. Notable showcases in the U.S. include The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and The Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside exhibitions in New York at Marvelli Gallery, Ubu Gallery, Churner and Churner, and The Museum of Arts and Design.
Karsten's work can be found both in private and public collections, including esteemed institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum in New York, The Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, The Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC, and the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei, Taiwan.
